Kelly Rutherford's Bags and Style

Usually we have pretty good luck identifying the bags, shoes and clothes worn by the younger Gossip Girl stars because they are so heavily written about and photographed, but when it comes to the show’s adult characters, things get a little more tricky. Kelly Rutherford is undeniably lovely but doesn’t get quite as much blog ink as Blake and Leighton, so when her bags aren’t immediately recognizable, sometimes we’re at a loss.

Rutherford is known for her Hermes collection, much of which she uses as Lily Van Der Woodsen Bass Humphrey on the show, but the tweed and tan leather bag she’s toting in these photos doesn’t appear to be Hermes. It might be Ralph Lauren, which has placed many products on the shows’s stars as of late, but I’m having a hard time finding the bag on Lauren’s website. This is our last group of celebs we have in attendance at the Alice + Olivia Show during NYC Fashion Week. Gossip Girl stars Matthew Settle and Kelly Rutherford are all smiles and looking great before the show. While I believe Kelly’s smile is real, I am wondering about Matthew a bit. During NYC Fashion Week he was spotted without his wedding ring which obviously had everyone all a buzz. Since then, Matthew has confirmed that he and his wife, Naama Nativ have split. The two married in 2006.

Kelly sported some Alice + Olivia clothing of her own and looked absolutely fabulous. She is one celeb who always seems so graceful, elegant and friendly. Even when wearing a cropped fur vest and chunky jewelery, Kelly remains elegant.

Is there another celeb that loves Hermes as much as Kelly Rutherford does? The Gossip Girl star not only owns an enviable collection of the brand’s bags (and, most likely, scarves, shawls, shoes and other accessories), but she has what no other brand loyalist has – an Hermes child.

Ok, so her son Hermes wasn’t manufactured by the company like her Hermes Birkin was, but not even noted Birkin collector Victoria Beckham loves the brand enough to name a kid after it. And sure, I know some women with little lapdogs named Gucci or Fendi, but sacrificing a child to brand loyalty takes things to a whole new level. I hope she at least got a gratis Birkin out of it.

Whenever I see a picture like this one of Gossip Girl‘s Kelly Rutherford, I always silently thank the universe that paparazzi don’t constantly follow me. Because, if they did, I’m sure that the internet would contain a plethora of pictures featuring me making a face just as silly as this one. Although, truth be told, it does kind of fit her character. It’s rather apt.

What I find a tad more surprising, though, is that the show’s wardrobers gave her the same bag that we saw Blake Lively carrying a few days ago. Normally all of the characters’ styles are kept very separate since they are an outward representations of their personalities, and I don’t think we’ve ever seen an overlap before. This version of the Kotur Wallace Satchel is slightly more refined with smooth chocolate leather instead of the treated haircalf, and it’s in good company in Lily’s wardrobe – we almost always see her carrying Hermes.

Kelly Rutherford really loves Hermes. In fact, she loves it so much that she named her son after it. Literally, his name is Hermes. You can’t make this stuff up, people. And I thought it was bad when people named their little lap dogs “Gucci…”

Anyway, considering the overwhelming amount of Hermes handbags that her character Lily Van Der Woodsen carries on Gossip Girl, like the ostrich Hermes Birkin here, she must think that the role was made for her. And maybe it was – she plays the cold, often-divorced mom of reformed wild-child Serena with quite a bit of aplomb. Maybe the producers are paying her in Birkins as her motivation.
